Ashfall by Mike Mullin is a great prepping fiction book. It starts out with Alex the main character in the book experiencing a volcanic eruption of the huge caldera in Yellowstone Park. He lives in Iowa and the ash begins to fall and creates a huge amount of chaos. He is at home alone and his parents and bratty sister are away at his uncles house 250 miles away. The story goes through him leaving home and his adventures and mishaps as he travels the 250 miles to find his family.
This is a great written piece of fiction and the author goes into great detail about the weather and the surroundings that Alex has to endure. It also goes in-depth into the things he has to do to survive. The thing that I most like about this book is the fact that you find out that you do need others to survive in an emergency situation. Along the way he meets a girl and her mother and he ends up falling in love with her and they take care of each other to stay alive.
I had never heard of the author before this book but he has definitely got a great book on his hands. Their is a follow up book due out this summer that follows this story and continues on after the end of this book. I look forward to reading that book as soon as it comes out. I read the Kindle version and it was great. I highly recommend this book if you like survival fiction. This book really makes you think about how you would go about staying alive in the same situation.

I was just reading the post about the Mexican earthquakes and commented about needing something to prep for volcanic eruptions or lava and.....BOOM, here it is!! Thats BBVD!!
Glad you enjoyed ASHFALL! The sequel, ASHEN WINTER, will be out October 8th. There's lots more info on my website, www.mikemullinauthor.com.
A lot of people WANT something to happen, this may seem odd when you consider the threat it will pose & the damage done. But the fact is we have had our rights of freedom crushed so badly, little by little they have been taken away from us until our quality of life is now being effected.
If a major disaster happens to distrupt government control, then our lives will be back in our own hands. Yes I know all the arguements against this, & I am not saying it is all right, but it is a fact.
I love these types of books. It enables one to enjoy the experience & makes one think.
Regards, Keith.

Agreed....simple self-determination. That is all man has a right to....the ability to chart his own path and destiny. That is what the founding fathers laid down for us and what we have strayed from.
